Being single and surviving the wedding season.

Indian weddings are a special occasion for ‘eligible’ bachelors. Even if you are happily single in your life, the wedding season is one of those phases where the universe conspires to remind you that your life is incomplete if you are unmarried. People who might not talk to you on a regular basis or meet you even once in a month will all show grave concern for your nuptials. “Beta, when are you getting married,” this question sounds familiar, eh? But the embarrassment does not stop after politely answering their gentle query. Here are a few struggles that singles face during the Indian wedding season.

1. The not-so-sweet relatives
The venue becomes the breeding ground for singles. Matchmaking becomes the favourite hobby of your relatives and neighbours. “Mr. Sharma’s daughter is single and Mr. Chadha’s son is working in the US. They would look good as a couple, no?” And yes, please stop warning singles that it’s their turn next.

2. The pressure to dress up.
There is an unsaid fashion rule—if you are not dressed up (think bling!), you are the odd one out in the crowd. Don’t be surprised if aunties raise eyebrows and warn you that you won’t find a good match if you don’t look ‘good’.

3. Beating the boredom.
In case, you don’t have any friends to hang out with, you better stay alone and get bored rather than being a hot topic of discussion among relatives.

4. Oh, the parents!
All of a sudden, they remember you are of marriageable age, pray to god that you find a good match and try to convince you why marriage is the best thing to happen to anyone.

5. What about kids?
“Oh, you are 29 years old? If you don’t get married right now, you would not be able to have children ever. When I was of your age, I had two kids.” Well, did someone ask them for their advice on family-planning?
